“Who are you wearing?” This is what I heard several times on International Women’s Day. I wasn’t on the red carpet for a fancy event, I was working out with my trainer in our matching, very vibrant and funky Katie K Active capris. In a sea of black-yoga leggings and activewear, only a logo may distinguish the difference between brands, so for the most part, everyone looks like they are wearing the same thing. But we all know we aren’t, right ladies (a certain lemony-brand, pun INTENDED doesn’t support plus size).
In a world where we strive to showcase our uniqueness and what makes us different from others, you may wonder why I’m proud to show that Lauren and I are wearing the same activewear. Because it’s a fun and expressive way for me to demonstrate my beliefs that regardless of shape and size…
We Are All Athletes
I interviewed Lauren back in the Fall (and she interviewed me). I was ready to take on a new challenge, wanted to learn from a new trainer, and while I’ve always had body positive experiences at my gym, I needed to ensure that my trainer and I were aligned on how to achieve my health and athletic goals. While trainers take on new clients everyday, and deal with people’s personal bias or baggage, I had the same trainer/ triathlon coach for over 5 years, and experienced the greatest and steepest learning curves from him. I felt like I knew so much already, knew what type of advice I wasn’t willing to entertain because along the way, my level of technical knowledge and self awareness had intensified. So I wanted help but naturally proceeded with caution, as we do at the beginning of a new relationship.
Fast forward to the present and I’m still training with Lauren. It’s been a great partnership including supporting my goals with Born to Reign Athletics. I have learned a lot from her, I’m progressing in my goals both technically and spiritually and I’m on my way to go after something really big. Box Jumps. Here’s where she is at.
And here’s where I am at.
That’s right, all I can do is point at this box at the moment. And I’m o.k with that. It may take a whole year before I can make that powerful jump. I have tight, inflamed, inflexible spots that I need to work on. I’ve lost some fitness as a result of having to pull back. And while the expression “use it or lose it” is very real in the physical sense, I’ve never lost the strength in my mind, belief and confidence that resides in my soul.
New trainers, new capris, new challenges. I love them all, it keeps me feeling energized and alive. As I work my way up towards box jumps, I am training and rewarding myself with a couple of 5kms and an open water swim race on this year’s spring and summer schedule.

Congrats on the open water swim They are my favorite. I understand the box jump issue, I can do about the size you are pointing to but not nice and lightly like some of my teammates, but I do them all the same. My swim team has decided that we like open water swims better than other races so we are swimming across the lake in Kelowna again (it was so much fun last year), one in Canmore, one in Invermere and we are entertaining the idea of doing an open water race in Barbados in November. Should be a ton of fun.
I’ve been thinking about doing an article on destination races or even destination training camps/retreats. Who is running the one in Barbados, that sounds like a lot of fun?
